Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is the country's sixth University was officially established on 16 February 1984. UUM is also the only University determined that specializes management since its inception. Planning the construction of the sixth University began when the Ministry of education (now UNIVERSITIES under the Ministry of higher education) plan to set up the University in August 1983. On 19 October 1983 the Cabinet gave official approval to the project, which at the time called "the sixth University Project", in Kedah. Several months later, the official Office of the sixth University was named Universiti Utara Malaysia officially opened on February 15, 1984 in Jitra. Four months later, UUM moved to the campus of Darul Aman in Jitra in June 1984 when the first phase of the project completed. The transfer is done to celebrate the arrival of the first students of the University by their entry at the beginning of July 1984.

 

In addition at UUM there are 15 residential colleges, which can accommodate 20,000 students as a whole. The Institute is named after the many multinational companies and companies, namely MAS, TENAGA Nasional, TELEKOM MALAYSIA, PROTON, PETRONAS, TRADEWINDS, EON, SIME DARBY, MISC, PERWAJA, MAYBANK, BANK MUAMALAT, AL-BUKHARY, BANK RAKYAT and SME BANK listed companies.
